University of the Free State
UFS No Student Hungry (NSH)

The University of the Free State (UFS) emphasises student success and student well-being, which is the core of what the University aims to achieve as captured in our vision statement. To contribute to this objective as set out by the UFS, the Food Environment office offers two primary programmes to support students with their essential need for nutritional food. The necessity for this assistance across our campuses is unfortunately greater than what we are presently capable of offering, for this reason a selection process has been implemented.

NSH Bursary

The No Student Hungry (NSH) Bursary Programme was instituted by the UFS in 2011. This programme seeks to address food insecurity among students by offering a small daily allowance as a single meal relief in order to enhance students’ opportunities to complete their academic responsibilities. The bursary is awarded to students as based on a pre-determined criteria that focus on the degree of financial need and vulnerability of students. Successful students will also be required to participate in volunteer work within the UFS Food Environment Office.

Food Parcels

The Food Parcel initiative at the UFS provides aid to students who require bare necessities such as food and toiletries for day-to-day functioning, on a monthly basis. Food parcels include seasonal vegetables that are sourced from the gardens cultivated on our campuses. Parcels are sponsored primarily by a third-party company, Tiger Brands and Gift of The Givers is an expression of each stakeholder's commitment to responsible corporate citizenship and promoting human dignity. The collaboration also provides essential support for social economic development of our local communities through active participation in various communal and environmental initiatives.
